Handai Rijo Fes is an event held to help junior and senior high school girls from all over Japan discover the fun and appeal of science and learn about future career paths, and to support their decision to enter into a scientific field. This year, some 560 attendees, including junior and senior high school girls and their parents, were in attendance. In addition, 15 institutions from the corporate sector participated in the event, allowing this event to contribute to industry-university collaboration.

After receiving the Certificates of Appreciation, the student staff had a conversation with Executive Vice President Kudoh and Associate Professor UMEDA Junko of the Joining and Welding Research Institute, who served as the coordinator of Handai Rijo Fes.

Executive Vice President Kudoh encouraged the student staff, saying, “I hope that you all, as women, will take leadership roles in your generation by taking advantage of the momentum to promote women’s success.”

In addition, on Wednesday, October 17, Executive Vice President Kudoh presented a Certificate of Appreciation from President Nishio to the three students who had talked about the appeal of Osaka University in a lively discussion with President Nishio on stage at Rijo Fes.

After receiving the Certificates of Appreciation, the students had a conversation with Executive Vice President Kudoh, along with Professor SUGIYAMA Kiyohiro (Center for Education in Liberal Arts and Sciences) and Associate Professor UMEDA Junko, two individuals who had been involved in planning the discussion with President Nishio at Rijo Fes.

The students spoke about topics like satisfaction with their student life, issues such as balancing life events (such as marriage) with advancing to graduate school, and their career prospects for the future. Executive Vice President Kudoh was impressed by just how much these 1st year students had been thinking about things other than just earning credits.
