Osaka University Center for the Study of CO* Design Symposium - STEAMM: Sciences x Arts x Humanities

2018-9-7 (Fri) 9:45 - 15:00

Overview

Innovation is necessary to tackle important challenges for modern society, such as moving to Industry 4.0 (the 4th industrial revolution related to automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies) and Society 5.0 (the "Super Smart Society" plan promoted by the government to achieve economic development and resolve social issues), and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As shown in the expansion of design thinking, i.e., a solution-based approach to find what users really need, it is said that participation of individuals with artistic ability is essential in addition to those with abilities in the humanities and science in order to create innovation.

In educational circles, educators reaffirm the importance of education of Science, Technology, Engineering Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) and urge the importance of reviewing education. In these circumstances, issues, such as eliminating the hierarchical structure of specialized fields and restoring the academic balance, have been raised for discussion.

For this symposium, we've invited Dr. Jay Labov, a leader of higher education in science, and Dr. Susan Albertine, a leader of education in the humanities, to speak about the current state of humanities-science-arts interdisciplinary education in the United States.

In addition, Prof. Reiko YAMADA, a leader in Japanese higher education, as well as Prof. Oriza HIRATA and Prof. Cihangir Istek from Osaka University, will also speak to consider about what education should be provided in Japanese universities and graduate schools in order to overcome competition from the rest of the world and how to nurture individuals with expertise who can create innovation.
