Seminar about Electron Microscopes

2014-5-21 (Wed) 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

The Scientific Instrument Renovation and Construction Support Center will be holding a "Seminar about Electron Microscopes" in order to deepen understanding regarding electron microscopes and their uses.

This seminar is designed for persons who'd like to start using an electron microscope through to persons who have experience using an electron microscope but who'd like to learn more. Therefore, whether you're a beginner regarding the electron microscope or an experienced user, we look forward to welcoming you to this seminar!

Date and Time: Wednesday, May 21 -- 10:00 a.m. ~ 6:00 p.m.
Venue: Library Hall, Science and Engineering Library, Suita Campus
Capacity of the venue: 100

Program

Morning Portion

Lecture #1: "Scanning Electron Microscopes" -- TAMEIKE Akane, JEOL Ltd.

The lecture will cover the following points:

  • Basics of scanning electron microscopes
  • The signal used in scanning electron microscopy
  • The principle behind and the structure of the scanning electron microscope
  • Obtaining good data from a scanning electron microscope
  • Setting usage parameters (acceleration voltages, emission current, working distance, aperture)
  • Electric conductivity (observing samples with no conductivity)
  • Q & A

Afternoon Portion

Special Lecture (1:00 ~ 2:00 p.m.): "Non-destructive observation and Observation theory using a Scanning Electron Acoustic Microscope (SEAM)" -- SHIBUTANI Yoji, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University

Lecture #2 (2:15 ~ 6:00 p.m.): "Regarding Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS)" -- TAMEIKE Akane, JEOL Ltd.

  • EDS basics
  • Regarding X-rays
  • The principle behind and structure of EDS
  • Obtaining better data in EDS
  • Re condition setting (acceleration voltage, emission current, PHA mode and analysis time, etc.)
  • (Range for X-ray occurrence) method of analysis in accordance with sample
  • Way of analyzing where there is spectral overlap
  • Q & A

Deadline for making application: Monday, May 19, 2014
