Date & Time: Saturday, February 15, 2014, 2:00 ~ 3:30 p.m.

Lecturer: MORIKAWA Kazunori, Professor, Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences, Osaka University

One may take the ability to perceive and recognize the outer world for granted, but the mechanism for doing so is quite complicated. Furthermore, the sense of vision is not always correct.
Why do illusions occur? Professor Morikawa will explain the cause and mechanism behind illusions by citing a variety of examples. Visual illusions occur not only in special geometric figures, but also in real life, for example, outfits to make your look thinner and makeup to make you look more attractive. If time permits, he will talk about misperceptions in thought and mistaken decisions based on prejudice as well.
