Science Café on the Next Edge #11 -- At the front line of Advanced Technology: "Targeting atomic self-assembly"

2013-1-17 (Thu) 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Electronic devices in our every-day world are made up of electronic parts such as transistors. Year by year and month by month, these parts get smaller and smaller. In fact, we've now reached the point where the arrangement and assembling of single atoms is possible.

Our guest speaker for this café is YANAGIDA Takeshi, a researcher who is pushing miniaturization to the ultimate with direct control of matter on the atomic scale and self-assembly of atoms in the creation of "nanowires." Listen to Dr. Yanagida and gain an understanding of the secrets behind the melding of the latest nanotechnology with the natural power of self-assembly.

Lecturer: YANAGIDA Takeshi, Associate Professor, Funding Program for Next Generation World-Leading Researchers, Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research

Facilitator: TAKAGI Akihiko, Specially Appointed Associate Professor, Immunology Frontier Research Center

Doors open at 1:00 p.m.

Venue: Art Area B1 -- Concourse, 1st basement, Naniwabashi Station, Keihan Nakanoshima Line

This Science Café on the Next Edge is being conducted as an outreach research project selected as a NEXT Program. NEXT Programs are a research support system for researchers who have the potential to be world leaders in science and technology. NEXT aims to develop science and technology from a mid- and long-term perspective and contribute to the sustainable growth of the nation and to solutions for political and social challenge by supporting advanced research and development, programs recommended by the government's new growth strategies (principles) and decided upon at a Cabinet meeting on December 30, 2009.

What is "Science Café on the Next Edge"?

Science Café on the Next Edge is the name for an informal seminar sponsored by Osaka University Research Support Office for Large-Scale Education and Research Projects. The Science Café on the Next Edges invite researchers whose programs had been selected as NEXT Program by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and serve as forums for dialogue between researchers and citizens. The organizers hope that participants can appreciate these chances to learn about next-generation environmental technology and bioscience in these Cafés.
