Exhibition: "Stitching Resistance: Narratives of Daily Life in Chilean Arpilleras"

2010-10-12 (Tue) - 2010-10-16 (Sat) Culture, Art

A Chilean Arpillera Exhibition will be held from Tuesday, October 12 through Saturday, October 16 at the Museum of Osaka University. Under the repressive junta of General Augusto Pinochet, responsible for the disappearances of many loved ones, Chilean women raised their voices through arpilleras, three dimensional appliqué textiles. With only needle, thread, and scraps of cloth, the women of Chile brought international awareness regarding the disappearance of their loved ones under the Pinochet dictatorship. This arpillera exhibition tells a tale with political overtones: the story of the resistance of women, tales conveying political and social messages through art.

In this exhibition, about 40 works, mainly ones created in the 1970s and 1980s, will be on display. Roberta Bacic, who has held arpillera exhibitions in many places in the world, will serve as guest curator. This exhibition is a valuable chance to view arpillera quilts, an art form rarely exhibited in Japan.

During the exhibition period, guided tours and a round-table talk will be held.

There is NO fee for attending any of the events and advance registration is not required.
