Modernity and Beyond

Toward the Reframing of "Human Security" and the "Philosophy of Sustainability" from Southeast Asian Perspectives

The Global Collaboration Center (GLOCOL) will hold the first workshop of Modernization and beyond from Thursday, March 17 through Monday, March 22, 2010. In this workshop, in order to develop clues for how we might approach global issues, participants will exchange opinions concerning global issues that people in East Asia and Southeast Asia share but cope with in different ways.
Under the key themes of "Modern Nation State" --especially the management of life and death in the modern nation state -- and "Multiculturalism", we will discuss the structure of issues with local specialists from three locations in Thailand and other Southeast and East Asia: Songkran Niyomsane Forensic Medicine Museum, a Buddhist temple, and a Myanmar community.
By doing so, we'd like to come up with possibilities for dealing with global issues from local points of view and to reexamine Western and modern ways of understanding of such.
This GLOCOL sponsored workshop is the first GLOCOL Bangkok Seminar Series and a trial approach for connecting loosely-linked multifaceted research networks in East and Southeastern Asia.
