2010-3-9 (Tue) 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Osaka University

Improving Writing Skills in Professional Japanese Language Instruction

-- Educational Problems for both International Students and Japanese Students --

The international Student Center will hold a seminar on improving writing skills on Tuesday, March 9, 2010. The theme of this seminar, improving writing skills, is an important topic as pointed out by both instructors and international students. The ability to present and express one's ideas in written form is important both in education and research at a university and also in the real world. Most persons need to continually work on improving their writing not only while in university, but also after graduation. It has long been noted that Japanese students are lacking in the ability to skillfully communicate their ideas verbally. However, improving one's writing skills is important not only for Japanese students but also for most international students.
In the future, the university needs to consider implementing a comprehensive curriculum to give instruction in both thesis writing and writing skills for business. In terms of conveying the necessary ideas correctly and concisely to one's readers, the writing techniques for academic papers and business have many similarities.
This seminar has invited two professors from other universities to speak about language instruction and the instruction of Japanese thesis writing in order to assist students when embarking on their career. The International Student Center will also make presentation regarding this topic. It is hoped that this seminar will be a forum for stimulating discussions about writing education at Osaka University.
