Beyond the Contours of State, Seminar #6 -- The Reply to Mother India

2009-12-22 (Tue) 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Beyond the Contours of State aims to look into how the regional powers of India, China, and Russia have been depicted by reading a variety of materials.

In the previous five sessions, we read and discussed the book Mother India written by the American Katherine Mayo after her return from British India. This rather infamous book created a lot of controversy both in India and abroad and has been roundly criticized since its publication in 1927.

In this 6th session, we hope take a good look at the controversy surrounding Mother India, examining the opinions both pro and con concerning this book. In addition, we will take a look at the book Reply to Mother India written by Chandravati Lakhanpal, an Indian woman. We hope to consider the images of India created by these varying opinions.
