Photographic Film Preservation Workshop -- "Are your library's micro films OK?"

2009-12-22 (Tue) 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Osaka University Libraries will hold a workshop dealing the theme of micro film and data preservation at the Main Library on Tuesday, December 22.

The Main Library has a micro film data room; however, a portion of the micro films acquired a vinegar syndrome-specific acetic acid odor because of a delay in installing a 24-hour air conditioning system. A dehumidifier system was also recently installed. In addition, the library was able to undertake the preservation of deteriorating micro films thanks to a 2008 grant from the Tajima Memorial University Libraries Promotion Foundation.

By using a check list for film deformation and vinegar syndrome stage during the preservation work, problems that we had not noticed with our naked eyes were revealed.

In this workshop, attendees can learn useful knowledge for their work by acquiring a basic knowledge about film and assessing deterioration by viewing the progress of vinegar syndrome using micro films at the library.

There will also be lectures on digital data preservation in this seminar. It is hoped that attendees of this seminar will be able to obtain a wealth of knowledge about film.
