In the midst of globalization, the economy and administration of Osaka has been drastically changed with art and culture seemingly going nowhere and the future looking bleak.
In thinking of the future, we need to remember that in such times Osaka was born and has progressed in the past.
"Tourism in Invincible Osaka" (designated as Osaka City Cultural Asset) was
created by the Bureau of Electricity and the Department of Industry in
Osaka in 1937.
In 1925, Osaka became the biggest city--"Invincible Osaka"--surpassing Tokyo in
terms of area and population due to the second city area expansion
program. This film depicts how Osaka changed under the
leadership of mayor SEKI Hajime. This movie portrays Osaka as a city
with history and tradition, a city that has progressed since the ancient
Naniwa Palace but, at the same time, has remained a modern city
in which the Midosuji Boulevard and subways were constructed, ports were
developed, and cultural facilities such as museums, a zoo and a science
museum were built in conjunction with city planning that incorporated civic beauty.
"Tourism in Invincible Osaka", a valuable film
recording the Great Osaka Period will be shown. 120 items
such as pamphlets, advertisements, publications and newspaper
photos from that era as well as scenery from
"Suito," a sightseeing boat, will provide additional enjoyment and information about famous sites shown in the film. The exhibition will also take up the topic of urban problems which escalated behind
the beautiful name "Invincible Osaka"--facts which are contrary to
the bright image of the tourism promotion film. In addition, this exhibition will touch on the
subject of "mysteries of a city" hiding in urban tourism.
