To Individuals who wish to study at Osaka University under the "Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program" [国家建設高水平大学公派研究生項目]

Details regarding application methods for individuals who wish to enter the university in October 2021 or later are currently under preparation. (These details are scheduled to be published in late November.)

You can peruse information pertaining to last year's applications below, but please be aware that information pertaining to this academic year may differ from the information currently listed on this page.

Doctoral students

Osaka University implements a tuition fee support system for individuals who wish to study for a doctor's degree at an OU graduate school under the Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program [国家建設高水平公派研究生項目] sponsored by the Chinese Government through the China Scholarship Council (CSC).

Approximately 20 Chinese students (tentative number) will be selected by the Osaka University International Affairs Committee for tuition fee support through this system.

Those who wish to begin studying at OU in October 2020 should apply in accordance with the procedures noted below.

1. Who is Eligible:

Individuals are eligible for the Chinese Government Scholarship program "Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program" [国家建設高水平公派研究生項目] sponsored by the Chinese Government through the China Scholarship Council (CSC) if they meet the conditions outlined in (1) or (2) in addition to (3):

1. Individuals who have completed a master's course at a university (specified on Attachment 1) or Chinese Academy of Sciences and its affiliated institutes (specified on Attachment 2) and have been conferred with a master's degree.
2. Individuals seeking to be enrolled in a doctoral program at Osaka University from October 2020 and expect to be conferred with a master's degree from a university (specified on Attachment 1) or Chinese Academy of Sciences and its affiliated institutes (specified on Attachment 2) by the end of September 2020.
3. Individuals eligible to take the entrance examination in the following graduate schools/courses and who either plan to or have already applied to take the entrance examination:

I) Graduate School of Science: International Physics Course or Special Integrated Science Course (primary recruitment)

II) Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences: Special Entrance Examination for International Students in the Doctoral Course in the Department of Advanced Pharmaco-science (3-year course) or the Special Entrance Examination for International Students in Doctoral Course in the Department of Medical Pharmacy (4-year course)

III) Graduate School of Engineering: Winter Entrance Examination in the English Doctoral Course

2. How to apply:

Eligible applicants are required to submit the required documents noted below to the faculty member who'd like to be their advisor.

Application deadline: Monday, January 20, 2020

Contact the academic supervisor or the office of the graduate school you wish to enroll in. Applicants may search the various schools for professors in desired field using the Researcher Database.

Application Schedule

Required documents

All documents must be prepared in Japanese or English.

2. Letter of recommendation written on Letterhead by a dean or academic advisor at the university to which the applicant belongs/belonged

3. Certificates of (expected) master's degree from the university the applicant attends/attended
Certificates written in Chinese must be submitted with a certified Japanese or English translation.

4. Transcript from the university the applicant attends/attended
Transcripts written in Chinese must be submitted with a certified Japanese or English translation.

5. Any other documents required by the graduate school in which you wish to be enrolled.

3. Acceptance period: in October 2020

4. Screening method and result announcement:

1. The graduate school screens applicant's documents and successful applicants will be selected by the International Affairs Committee at Osaka University.

2. After successful applicants have been selected, graduate schools will send letters of acceptance to those applicants. (Mid-March 2020)

3. Individuals who passed the CSC screening are required to promptly submit a copy of the certificate of Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program issued by CSC (in both English and Chinese) to their academic advisor at Osaka University. (In or after May 2020)

5. Important points

Only those who fulfill the following conditions will be provided with financial support from Osaka University.

(1) Those who have passed the selection process of the Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program [国家建設高水平公派研究生項目] conducted by the Chinese Government through CSC.
(2) Those who will enter a doctoral program at Osaka University. 

6. Support details:

Entrance examination, enrollment, and tuition fees will be exempted. Only tuition fees for the standard course term of the doctoral program are covered by the University.

Note: Entrance examination fees that applicants paid through an application for a doctoral program in a graduate school will be returned after confirming that they have passed the CSC screening.

7. Note

Documents submitted by applicants are not returnable.

This tuition fee support system will be implemented on the premise that CSC will recruit individuals who wish to study for a doctor's degree at an OU graduate school.

Special research students

Non-degree students who wish to receive research advice at a graduate school within Osaka University are required to complete the following procedures.

1. Confirm whether or not your university or graduate school has an academic exchange agreement through which students can attend OU without paying additional tuition on the university-to-university level and/or the school-to-school level.

2. If your university is in an exchange agreement with Osaka University, you must confirm the application procedures for student exchange (tuition fee waiver) based on the exchange agreement with the student exchange staff at your university, receive a recommendation, and complete the necessary procedures.

In order to request a letter of acceptance, please confirm with the student exchange staff at Osaka University through the student exchange staff at your university. (If your university is in an exchange agreement with Osaka University, it is not necessary to get into contact with your faculty advisor.)

If your school is not in an exchange agreement with Osaka University, please confirm with your faculty advisor whether or not your tuition fee will be covered by the graduate school of your choice.
