Financial Aid for Studying Abroad

Major financial aid programs for Osaka University students to study abroad are outlined below.

Information about financial aid provided by the government and other organizations will be posted on the bulletin boards of schools and graduate schools. Students wishing to study abroad are encouraged to frequently check such information.

Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)

1. Student Exchange Aid--aid for sending OU students abroad for short term

Note: Acceptance of applications for the 2012-13 year's program has finished.

Intended for: 

Students enrolled full-time in a university or graduate school (excluding international students) who plan to join an exchange study program for 3 - 12 months.

Quota:

as per quota specified by the Japan Student Services Organization.

Amount of support:

80,000 yen per month

Enrollment period:

Enrollment abroad commences between April of the year following application and March of the coming year (Period 2).

Applications accepted from:

June of the year preceding one's hoped for enrollment abroad.

Application deadline:

October of the year preceding one's hoped for enrollment abroad.

Application materials:

Individuals wishing to study at a university with a university-university exchange agreement are required to apply for such at the same time they apply for studying abroad.

Individuals wishing to study at a university with a school-to-school exchange agreement are requested to apply by filling out the application form below:

2. Student Exchange Aid--aid for sending OU students abroad

Note: Acceptance of applications for this program has finished.

Intended for:

Students enrolled in school or 1st semester of doctor's course of graduate school, and who will study overseas for approximately 3 ~ 12 months

Quota:

a "moderate" number of students

Amount of support:

monthly amount of 50,000 yen per student

Enrollment commences:

Period 1: enrollment abroad commences between January and March of the year following application
Period 2: enrollment abroad commences between April of the year following application and March of the coming year

Applications accepted from:

June of the year preceding one's hoped for enrollment abroad

Application deadlines:

Period 1: July of the year preceding one's hoped for enrollment abroad
Period 2: October of the year preceding one's hoped for enrollment abroad

Application materials:

Individuals wishing to study at a university with a university-university exchange agreement are required to apply at the same time when they apply for studying abroad.
Individuals wishing to study at a university with a school-to-school exchange agreement are requested to apply by filling out the following application form.

3. Osaka University aid for overseas travel -- accident insurance premium program

Note: Acceptance of applications for this program has finished.

Intended for:

Students enrolled full-time in school including international students and those who join a student exchange program for 3 - 12 months

Amount of support:

Aid up to 80,000 yen per student.

Enrollment commences:

Enrollment abroad commences between January of the year following application and March of the coming year.

Applications accepted from:

 Applications are accepted between January of the current year and March of the following year.

Application deadline:

Early February of the current academic year (i.e., just before the end of the academic year). (Confirm with Osaka University)

Application materials:

4. Aid for short-term overseas research exchange students

Note: Acceptance of applications for this program has finished.

Intended for:

Students enrolling in the 2nd semester of doctor's course of graduate school and who will study overseas for approximately 2-10 months (see guidelines for details)

Quota

Approximately 10 students per year

Amount of support:

Up to an annual amount of 1.2 million yen per student.

Enrollment commences:

Period 1: enrollment abroad commences between April and September.
Period 2: enrollment abroad commences between October of the year following application and March of the following year.

Period 3: enrollment abroad commences between December of the year following application and March of the following year.

Applications accepted from:

Period 1: January
Period 2: June
Period 3: Early October

Application deadline:

Period 1: Mid-February
Period 2: Late July
Period 3: September

5. Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)

Aid for Student Exchange Programs--aid for sending OU students abroad for a long term

Note: Acceptance of applications for this program has finished.

Intended for:

Students who will study abroad to earn degrees after graduating or completing regular courses at Osaka University (excluding international students) and who meet requirements specified by JASSO.
Quota as per quota specified by the Japan Student Services Organization.

Amount of support: 

Monthly amount: 95,000 yen ~ 158,000 yen (varies by area).

Tuition fees: up to 30,000 US dollars (may vary depending on 2012~13 budget).

Enrollment commences:

Enrollment abroad commences between April of the year following application and March of the year after that.

Applications accepted from period:

From November of the year preceding one's hoped for enrollment abroad.

 

Application deadline:

 Early December of the year preceding one's hoped for enrollment abroad. (Confirm with JASSO.)

How to apply:

6. Aid for Student Overseas Training Programs JASSO Type 2 Financial Aid for students who study abroad (loan with interest)

Note: Acceptance of applications for the 2011-12 program has finished.

Eligibility:

Students enrolling in the undergraduate school or graduate school and who will study overseas for 3 months or more. For details, please go to the JASSO website.

Amount of support:

Undergraduate students: choose from monthly amount of 30,000 yen, 50,000 yen, 80,000 yen, 100,000 yen, or 120,000 yen.

Graduate students: choose from monthly amount of 50,000 yen, 80,000 yen, 100,000 yen, 130,000 yen, or 150,000 yen.

Enrollment commences:

Period 1: Enrollment abroad commences between April and July.

Period 2: Enrollment abroad commences between August and November.

Period 3: Enrollment abroad commences between December of the year following application and March of the next year.

Application period:

Application accepts from December of the year preceding one's hoped for enrollment abroad.

Period 1: Mid-January

Period 2: Early May

Period 3: Early September (Confirm with JASSO)

7. Aid for Student Overseas Training Programs JASSO Type 2, Financial Aid for students who study abroad (loan with interest)

Amount of support:

choose from monthly amount of 50,000 yen, 80,000 yen, 100,000 yen, 130,000 yen, or 150,000 yen.

Enrollment abroad commences between April of the year following application and March of the year after that.
