1. Universities accepting international students and quota
Students going abroad to one of the universities below are not charged tuition by that university thanks to the exchange agreement.
- University of Groningen, Netherlands
- Ruhr University Bochum, Germany
- Heidelberg University, Germany
- Uppsala University, Sweden
Quotas:
Enrollment in the overseas university commencing by March 2011: 2 students
Enrollment in the overseas university commencing between April 2011 and March 2012: 4 students
2. Eligibility
Applicants meeting all the following conditions can apply.
- Graduate
students belonging to the Graduate School of Science or
Graduate School of Engineering Science or undergraduate students in the
4th year of such.
Individuals who plan to enroll into the Graduate School of Science or Graduate School of Engineering Science. - Individuals who have English language skills for conducting research and receiving advanced education at an overseas university and are capable of earning credits by studying there.
- After retuning from studying
abroad, individuals
who will continue to study at Osaka
University and are capable of completing their course of study without
staying in the university an additional year(s).
- Individuals with Japanese nationality or permanent resident status.
3. Period of studying abroad
Basically 6 months; not less than 5 months
4. Application deadline
Anytime up to 4 months before enrollment commences. Please make sure to check with the International Student Affairs Division, Department of International Affairs before making application.

5. Application form
- Application form (A4 size) (specified form) -- 1 copy
- • A letter of
recommendation from your advisor (guidance teacher) (A4 size)
• A paper certifying that you are expected to earn credits within the course term and English skills (form of this is not specified) -- 1 copy (A4 size)
• The above paper must include the contents of the arrangement(s) made with the overseas laboratory of your choice regarding your research theme and how you will proceed on it. (A4 size) - Academic
performance certificate after enrolling in the university -- 1 copy
- A score report for an English proficiency test such as TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS -- 1 copy (only the applicable document is required)

7. Screening
- Successful applicants will be screened by documents submitted (primary screening) and an interview.
- Individuals who passed the primary screening will be informed of the interview schedule.
8. Overseas studying costs
(1) Based on the exchange program agreement in the consortium, tuition fees are not charged.
(2) Financial aid
- 80,000 yen per month will be paid for up to 6 months.
*Other than the above, financial aid of less than 80,000 yen may be available; however, individuals receiving type I or II financial aid from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) cannot receive the financial aid during the period of studying abroad. Individuals hoping to obtain the above financial aid must complete procedures for suspending financial aid from JASSO.
(3) Other costs regarding studying abroad must be paid by the individual.
9. Enrollment status at overseas university
The enrollment status at the overseas university will be registered as an exchange student at the university.
10. Enrollment status at Osaka University
Under this exchange program, the enrollment status of the student during the study abroad period will be recognized by the student's school as "studying abroad."
11. Miscellaneous info
(1) Individuals on the short list may not be able to study abroad in the following cases:
- If admission is not obtained from the university of your choice.
- If your health deteriorates.
- If the quota in the overseas university of your choice is reduced.
- If your studying abroad should be deemed inappropriate.
(2) The major and laboratory in the overseas university will be based on Osaka University's principles of guidance and applicant's hope; however, the wishes of the applicant are not always met depending on circumstances in overseas university.
Before making applications, applicants need to talk with the laboratory of their choice about their theme setting and how to proceed with their research.
Applicants can apply to 4 overseas universities, but after screening, they can apply for only one overseas university.
(3) Procedures for enrollment and traveling must be completed by individual himself/herself.
