How it got started
The presidents of nine major research universities in East Asia gathered at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on January 8 and 9, 1996, and agreed to establish The Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) in order to promote exchange among the universities. The preparatory meeting and the first general meeting were held during those two days.

Objectives of the Association
One of their objectives was to create a forum for major research universities of East Asia. Another was to identify fields in which those universities could cooperate in accordance with mutual interests, such as: exchange among faculties and students, development of common curricula, credit transfers, cooperation in joint research, co-hosting of international conferences to discuss impending problems, and joint-use of facilities, information, and materials.
