What is an Internship?
The Osaka University internship program is defined as "a program in which students are given the chance to experience working in a company or other organization for a limited period of time while in university as a part of their education." In the 2010-2011academic year, internships related to professional education were conducted in the School of Letters, School of Human Sciences, Graduate School of Human Sciences, School of Law, School of Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Economics, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka School of International Public Policy, and Graduate School of Information Science and Technology. In addition to the courses at the schools above, a new course, Overseas Field Study & Internships, has been introduced by the Global Collaboration Center (GLOCOL).
Among other activities, GLOCOL supports graduate students in overseas internships in international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and such. The aim of such internships is to develop each student's ability to adopt practical approaches to global issues based on their expertise and to help them to design their career path. GLOCOL also has set up a support system for students who complete Overseas Field Study & Internships. For more information, go here.
As a result of the social and economic changes occurring in our country, persons capable of generating creative ideas, responding to circumstances flexibly, solving problems, and acting in a self-directed manner are in demand these days. However, the current tendency of young people to leave a job soon after getting it because it is not to their liking has become a serious social problem. In this situation, internships have been drawing attention as a method for personnel development by enhancing both the desire to learn of students as well as their career orientation.
Although some internships are classes, companies also give the opportunity for students to actually work in their programs. Students are encouraged to join such internships because of the benefits to be gained from such experience. The objective of such internships is for the student to actually experience working at the company; thus, in such an internship, it's quite natural that the student is expected to observe proper business manners. The personnel of companies accepting a student as an intern are using their precious time for training the student. Therefore, the student joining an internship program should not approach the internship in an "I-can-take-it-or-leave-it" manner and must remember that s/he is viewed as a representative of Osaka University.
