Reorganization of Research Laboratories and Centers
Research organizations have been reorganized to form COEs (Centers of Excellence), and to promote state-of-the-art research. Osaka University is promoting the development of research through creating an environment conducive to research.
1. Research Facilities
The following facilities have been reorganized in response to the trends in science and the demands of society, together with a revision of the original purposes behind their establishment, in order to form a more suitable organizational structure.- Research
Institute for Microbial Diseases
Reorganized from 14
smaller divisions into 5 larger divisions (1994).
- Institute
of Scientific and Industrial Research
Reorganized from 21
smaller divisions into 6 larger divisions (1995).
- Joining
and Welding Research Institute
Reorganized from 9
smaller divisions into 3 larger divisions (1996). Moreover, the name
was changed from “Welding Research Institute” to
the current name.
- Institute
of Social and Economic Research
Reorganized its
research branches and established the Research Center for Behavioral
Economics (2004).
- Institute for Protein Research Reorganized from 11 smaller divisions into 4 larger divisions (2004).
2. Joint-Use Research Facilities
- Establishment of the Center for International Education and Exchange -- CIEE (formerly known as the "International Student Center") (1994)
- Establishment of the International Center for Biotechnology (1995)
- Establishment of the Center for Quantum Science and Technology under Extreme Conditions (1996)
- Establishment of the Research Center for Superconductor Photonics (2000)
- Establishment of the Cybermedia Center (2000, Nationwide Joint-Use Facility)
- Reorganization of the Genome Information Experiment Facility, creating the Genome Information Research Center (2001)
- Establishment of the Research Center for Solar Energy Chemistry (2001)
- Establishment of the Museum of Osaka University (2002)
- The [reorganized] Institute of Laser Engineering (2004)
- The [reorganized] Research Center for Environmental Preservation (2004)
- Establishment of the Institute for Higher Education Research and Practice (2004)
- Establishment of the Center for Advanced Science and Innovation (2004)
- Establishment of the Health Care Centers (2004)
- Integrated the Research Center for Superconductor Photonics with Institute of Laser Engineering (2004)
- Establishment of the Center for Advanced Medical Engineering and Informatics (2004)

- Establishment of the Renovation Center of Instruments for Science Education and Technology (2007)

3. SCS (Space Collaboration System) Project
- Osaka University is promoting higher education through the utilization of a system of satellite connections between universities, conducting lectures, conferences and seminars between itself and other universities and graduate schools.
