Establishment and Reorganization of Undergraduate and Graduate Schools

Osaka University is restructuring its faculties in order to perfect the education given at these respective faculties, as well as in order to respond to the progress of science, the diversity of society, and the needs of students.

1. The Establishment of Advanced Faculties

  • School of Dentistry (1951) This was the first such faculty established among national universities.
  • School of Economics At the time of its establishment, this faculty was a new type of School of Economics, offering only the study of modern economic theory. The School of Law and Economics was split into the School of Law and the School of Economics in 1953.
  • School of Engineering Science (1961) This sole such faculty among national universities was formed after amalgamating the School of Science and the School of Engineering.
  • School of Human Sciences (1972) A practical School of Human Sciences, comprised of Social Studies, Psychology and Pedagogy (1972). This was the first such school to be established in Japan

2. Reorganization of Faculties

  • Osaka University has reorganized these faculties in response to the reorganization of the graduate schools, the integration of courses and a shift towards a common system for university courses.
  • The promotion of a system of establishing a quota for 3rd year students entering from other universities, as well as increasing the overall number of entrants.
  • Increasing the number of working people, and graduates from junior colleges or professional schools entering the university.
