Osaka University extends its heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by the Great Tohoku Pacific Earthquake and its aftermath.
In 1931, Osaka University was founded as Osaka Imperial University. With roots reaching back to Kaitokudo, a "place for study" [gakumonsho], the university is one of Japan's leading comprehensive universities and has numerous education and research achievements to its credit. In October 2007, Osaka University merged with Osaka University of Foreign Studies, further raising its status as a comprehensive university.
2011 marked the 80th anniversary of the founding of Osaka University. In honor of this milestone, Osaka University held important commemorative events, open lectures, and more throughout its 80th year.
However, in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake and in order to place the highest priority on relief operations and restoration of the earthquake-stricken areas, Osaka University canceled the 80th Anniversary Ceremony, the anniversary party of celebration, and an anniversary performance of bunraku scheduled for Sunday, May 1, 2011. Regretfully, other commemorative events were canceled, postponed, or modified. For more information, please go here.
